In the early 1900s, residents of Encinitas used to come to this particular stretch of beach for moonlight picnics. Today, Moonlight State Beach
is a popular destination for all ages and features a snack bar, wide beaches, and volleyball and tennis courts.
Founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda, the Self Realization Fellowship
of Encinitas is a school of spirituality and meditation. Paramahansa Yogananda’s teachings have influenced millions of people around the world so much so that the most popular and idyllic surfing location was named after him — Swami's Surf Spot is an internationally known location and the best surf spot around. Brought into fame by the 1963 Beach Boys’ song “Surfin’ USA,” Swami’s Surf Spot
is a spiritual location for those out on the water and along the beach, as Paramahansa Yogananda chose this spot for his pilgrimage in 1937.
